Nireaha Tamaki

Our Maori collection tells about the dominant tribes in the area and there is a collection of artefacts found in the district.

Nireaha Tamaki was chief to the hapu that settled near Ngawapurua. Tamaki at one time operated the ferry across the Manawatu River at Ngawapurua. This painting of the chief was done by Gottfried Lindauer, a well known portrait painter and Woodville resident up until his death in June 1926.
